Did you know that Red-E 4Cycle Racing Oil is a renewable lubricant?

What is a renewable lubricant?

A portion of Red-E's 4Cycle formula is soybean oil. Soy has a higher natural viscosity than petroleum and is a material that can be replenished long after the oil well has gone dry. Be assured that the Red-E 4Cycle formula has not changed and this announcement is not regarding a new product.

The need for low-toxicity lubricants is being recognized around the world and there is growing regulatory pressure to reduce or eliminate certain emissions of petroleum lubricants.

Single cylinder racing engines have unique lubrication needs. Tolerances are not standard. Each racing engine is one of a kind. However, no matter what brand engine you are racing or who built it, they are all single cylinder.

The weight of the oil is important. It was determined early on that Red-E 4Cycle would be a straight 20wt oil. The cost involved in developing a multigrade product based on the size of the small engine racing market would be prohibitive and unnecessary as contamination from unburned fuel, dirt and engine acids require frequent oil changes. In our testing we found that formulas less than a 20wt did not protect as well as we hoped and if more than a 20wt they created too much drag. So, our goal when developing Red-E 4Cycle was to have one weight that could be taken from class to class, minimize wear and reduce the need for excessively frequent oil changes. Achieving this goal by using soy has resulted in less cost to our customers and a more stable product.

Including soybean oil as a partial replacement of mineral (petroleum) oil in the Red-E 4Cycle formula has proven a success in many ways. Red-E 4Cycle increases performance, increases flash point, increases service life, lowers toxicity characteristics and provides excellent lubricity. Due to the success we have had as a result of these benefits it is our long term goal to develop a complete bio-degradable product line. The research in developing enhanced soybean seed varieties and refining is significant and I only see better products for the future.

Benefits of Soy oil in Red-E 4Cycle:

Viscosity Index (VI):

The viscosity index is a numbering scale that indicates the changes in oil viscosity as operating temperature's change. These classifications are as follows:

  • Low VI - below 35
  • Medium VI - 35 to 80
  • High VI - 80 to 110
  • Very High VI - 110 to 125
  • Super VI - 125 to 160
  • Super High VI - above 160 to 200

An oil with a high viscosity index under goes very little change with temperature extremes and is considered to have a more stable viscosity. Red-E 4Cycle has a VI of 179. Even after a full day or week-end of racing the lubricating properties of Red-E 4Cycle are not depleted. However we do recommend that the oil be drained while it is still hot in order to expel any contaminates that Red-E 4Cycle is holding in suspension.

The high viscosity index of soybean oil, combined with excellent shear stability provides film strength protection,  reduce's blow-by and boost's power.

Soybean oil has a unique fatty acid composition which produces natural corrosion protection and detergency that provides a long lasting lubricating film to form a protective boundary on metal surfaces. Preventing metal to metal contact reduces engine temperatures and significant wear in the engine.

Soybean oil has significantly less volatility over solvent refined petroleum oil. This means that soy oil will perform at higher temperatures with less evaporation than mineral and synthetic base stocks. This eliminates dry starts which result in excessive wear.

Soybean oil has low foam tendency. This means a better lubricating fluid film during extensive operation.

Now having said all this I do want to point out that to get the most from Red-E 4Cycle your engine needs to be tuned for Red-E 4Cycle. Red-E 4Cycle allows you to tighten the engine and show a performance gain because, due to the soy oil, Red-E 4Cycle will flow through tighter tolerances and dissipate heat through out the engine (eliminating hot spots). Believe me, you can tighten a flat head and be just as fast if not faster and the engine will last a lot longer.
